Azumanga Daioh

   Home/Change Series

Azumanga Daioh, named for manga series creator Kiyohiko Azuma, follows the lives of six girls from their first day of high school through to graduation. While the story focuses mainly on their interactions as students, occasionally they will be shown on vacation or at their homes.

There really is no story as such for Azumanga Daioh, it's sort of like a third person perspective that allows little mini-stories to take place inside the broader series.

The effectiveness of the show's humor comes from massive amounts of over-the-top loopyness, combined with a heapin' helpin' of marvelous timing on the part of the voice cast.

Azumanga Daioh is often regarded as the founder of the "slice-of-life" sub-genre of anime. My own take is that this series blends elements of other sub-genres in such a way that the results seems like a new one. The first time I watched Azu as it is often called, I nearly fell out laughing several times.

While no single character is the proper star, the two who most commonly represent the series are Chiyo and Osaka.

Chiyo Mihama is a child genius, graduated to high-school at only ten years old. She is apparently quite wealthy, though not palatially affluent like for example Nagi Sanzenin of Hayate no Gotoku. One might think that she would be a stuck up snotty little brat. On the contrary. Chiyo quicky wins the hearts on her schoolmates with her gentle, kind-hearted manner. She is the most likeable character in the cast, at least in a conventional sense.

Ayumu Kasuga is a transfer from Osaka, hence her nickname. Osaka is in the Kansai region of Western Japan, which is thought of as a very different place culturally from the eastern Kantou region.

Anyway, Osaka's thought processes differ wildly from everyone else's on the show. She is often portrayed as a bit of a dullard, but it's really more a side effect of her unusual way of looking at the world around her. While she can be a bit lackadaisical and scatter-brained, she is very sharp when it comes to puns and riddles.

Rather than try to describe every girl here, I'd like to gradually explain them as I acquire material for each character.

If rapid fire comedy is your thing, then you'll enjoy Azumanga Daioh. As long as you don't mind a troupe consisting primarily of high-school girls.
